Need help with hard boiled eggs! The shells are sticking like nobody's business and I can't peel them without tearing the white apart. I brought them to a boil, took them off the water, let them sit for 15 minutes, then covered in cold water and ice.
Any suggestions? I'm thinking they might be a little underdone. The eggs were reasonably fresh, picked 'em up 2 days ago. I was going to make deviled eggs, now I think I've just made a mess. :-)

My Christmas present to myself? A very short 1.3 mile run.
I've been staying with my bf all month and haven't run since late November! So while he was napping off a stomach ache I grabbed my shoes outta my car and got some air! Sadly I noticed a bit of my endurance was gone, but it felt good.
Now that I feel a bit more comfortable with this city and found a route I might like, I'm getting back on the wagon :)
I'm sending encouraging thoughts to those who've been slacking with me!
MERRY CHRISTMAS FRIDAILIES! HO! HO! HO! (PIMP!) Good morning runners and Merry Christmas (to those of you who celebrate it, for everyone else -- Merry Last Friday in 2009)! Here's the daily training thread!
Yesterday's neighborhood nine miler was fantastic. And I procrastinated long enough that I actually DID get a chance to see lots of Christmas lights along my route. Today I'll be opening some presents shortly and then giving myself a present -- 12 miles, my first double digit run since November 8th! This is also something of a tradition, my '12 miles of Christmas' run.
So what is everyone else doing today, training and otherwise?
Question! What did you find underneath your tree/in your stocking/wherever this morning? Or, what do you HOPE to find there? (Again, for those here who don't do the Christmas thing... what WOULD you want to find if you DID have a Christmas tree?)
Wherever you are and whatever you celebrate this time of year, I hope it's all very very merry for all you here in runners !
Discuss... and MERRY CHRISTMAS (AND HAPPY RUNNING)!
From all the mods here at bakebakebake, have a wonderful, warm Christmas. It has largely become a 2½-month commercialized monstrosity, but at its core is something pure and true and steadfast. Ignore all the other crap, and cling to your family and/or loved ones, and make right the wrongs, and bake for them.
If you don't celebrate Christmas, have a wonderful, warm... 3-day weekend.
This is my first post and I come bearing a true delicacy...persimmon pudding! This is actually my sister's recipe, but I have tweaked it, so I'm laying claim to it! I doubt that she'll mind much...she's going to be eating it tomorrow anyway :)
I only have one picture, but this is literally seconds after removing it from the oven. In my opinion, it looks scrumptious! It will sink and darken a bit as it cools, too. This is more of a very, very moist cake consistency rather than the gelatinous consistency most puddings have. It's still a true persimmon pudding, though.
VWAV Chocolate chip cookies sub I thought I had margarine. I do not. All I have is a tub of Earth Balance and a tub of Smart Balance. Will either of them work?
I ask before trying because I used EB in a cookie recipe years back and they just ran and tasted like poo.
My 1 year old keeps asking for a cookie but I have none to give her and my family had millions of cookies all over tonight at the holiday party. She was going to lose her mind.
If it won't work are there any similar recipes that are simple so I might have everything I need? Cookies, cookie bars, anything! My beeb needs a cookie! :)
I found this recipe last thursday and since that day I've baked three batches! Now they are my ultra super duper favorite cookie in the whole world and forever!
Update on my Harry Potter Secret Santa! I asked everyone for some help doing a Harry-Potter themed secret santa for work, and I wanted to share the results! Everyone was very jealous, with the boss and the boss' daughter both saying that they are going to rig the selection next year so that I pick them!
I started off with dragon's eggs (brownies) in a basket with "grass" (tissue paper was all that I could find at the last minute) I used a recipe from vegancooking, but I can't remember exactly which one I used. And I made them in a little mold that I got for easter a couple years ago to make easter egg cakes to decorate, and then glued the halves together with frosting.
The second day I made Pepper Imps (peppermint patties) from a recipe on vegweb. I took an empty applesauce bottle and filled it with the imps and googled for some images to decorate it. I used a mold of gingerbread boys and girls (cause sadly my local kitchen store didn't have an "imp" mold, whatever that would be).
For the last day, I made Chocolate Frogs. I found a website that shows how to make the boxes, and I googled Frog Cards so that I could make my girl her very own wizard card. I found a frog mold, and made the peanut butter cups from vegweb.
All in all, it seemed like a big hit! thank you all for your suggestions!
This was an order for a judo-themed fondant cake from a lovely young lady to her boyfriend. She provided the design, along with a drawing of the 'pose' of the two figurines.
Dumb bimbo moment: I literally had to kneel down and replicate the pose to figure out how the legs were bent :P
Swedish cookies? Okay, so my dad is full-blooded Swedish and I want to make him some traditional cookies. He can't remember the name of his childhood favorite, but he told me they were: 1. very buttery cookies 2. looked like three fingers 3. covered in powdered sugar 4. were not Fattigmann
I guess his grandmother made them all the time, but he hasn't had them since he was a child. I've googled and looked in the bakebakebake memories, but can't find anything! Please help me out! I'd love to make them for Christmas if I get a recipe today :)
It's a Christmas miracle! Soo.. today is officially four weeks since my last run (Turkey Trot 10k on an injured leg). I'm not sure what was wrong with my leg; maybe a shin splint, or a baby stress fracture, or some kind of pulled muscle, but since a month ago, I haven't been able to make it more than a quarter mile without awful pain - and I had been running 15-17 miles for each week's long run beforehand. SAD.
Anyway, today I wrapped my leg and put on my very first pair of tennis shoes - they are SUPER heavy stability shoes, but I figured better safe than sorry. And I made it two miles! Unfortunately after four weeks off, two miles FELT like two miles in a not-so-good way, but still! I've really missed my stress release from running so it felt great to get out and go again. And - bonus - it's much more satisfying to run than to give dirty looks to all the runners you pass while bitter and unable to run. Ahem.
I'm going to try for another short beach run tomorrow. YAY! And to everyone who is injured, best of luck recovering. Imagine how great it will feel when you're back out there. Happy running, everyone!
Orange Cupcakes w/ Orange Buttercream Frosting Recipe is from Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World. Used the Orange Pudding Cupcakes minus the pudding and the Orange Buttercream Frosting w/ orange zest instead of lemon zest. Annoyed at the number of typos and mis-prints in this cook-book, though. The orange buttercream frosting recipe has three extra sentences from what I can only assume is another recipe involving blueberries. :)
Recipe from Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World: Orange cupcake: 1/3 cup canola oil 3/4 c granulated sugar 3/4 c plain soy milk/rice milk 1/2 c freshly squeezed orange juice 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 1/3 c flour 1 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp baking soda 1/4 tsp salt 1 tbsp grated orange zest
I put a major dent in my sleep debt last night, getting about 9 hours collectively and I feel pretty refreshed this morning. After a hearty bowl of oatmeal, I'm going to do something like 9 miles around my hometown, checking out Christmas decorations in the process (I'd wait til evening so I can see the lights but 1- I really wanna run now and 2- it's gonna be less icy in the daytime). There's also this CrossFit WOD (Deadlifts 1-10-1-20-1-30 reps) that looks mighty inviting.
So what is everyone else up to today, training and otherwise?
Question! Seeing as how it's Christmas eve after all, Santa's coming (as The Boss informs us below) so have you been naughty or nice this year? Me? I think everyone knows that answer.
chocolate truffle/red velvet cake balls!? Hey there (: I was browsing through this community a few days ago and found a post someone had made about a chocolate peppermint truffle they had made with red velvet cake balls. I would reeeeeally love to find the recipe but I can't seem to find it. I did a search for it as well but no luck. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? thanks in advance (:
christmas cookie recipes????!!! help?? I am trying not to fall victim to the temptation of non vegan cookies this year. help! i know this is last minute but what are some good sugar cookie recipes and peanut butter cookie recipes. also snickerdoodle types would be great!
also it would be nice to have an already vegan recipe vs. using a substitute. whatever you have is fine though! ill probably just end up buying newman os. lol pathetic substitute for vegan cookies but i left all my cooking things in my dorm and i doubt im going to go out and buy new everything. we will see. i hope i dont cave and eat the non vegan cookies... :(
I present to you all a Christmas roast. It's the perfect holiday meal. This roast beef is rich and flavorful, while still very buttery and tender without actually using any butter! Believe it, friends, for I speak the truth. This roast beef is perfection. I had never made a roast beef before, so I was extremely happy with this meal. The outside was crusty, lightly spicy, and expertly seasoned. You don't need a lot of fancy ingredients for this roast beef; you probably already have all of the ingredients in your pantry. I served this with mashed potatoes and Kramer and I were in heaven. The best part about this roast beef are the sandwiches you can make with it the next day. There's nothing better! If you're making Christmas dinner on Friday and still unsure as to what to make, this is the recipe, I promise! Recipe after the cut or on my blog at The Crepes of Wrath.
So this year my brother asked for some of my homemade spice rubs for Christmas. I just made them up and wrapped them, and I thought that maybe I could share the recipes here as ideas for nice little stocking stuffers for others to give to your loved ones as well.
Sorry, no pics of the finished product. But I can assure you that they're all very yummy!
What to do with oatmeal raisin cookies??? So, I baked some oatmeal raisin cookies the other day, and stored them in a ziplock bag (never doing that again!). Someone tried to clean up the dining room and moved the bag around too much and now they are mostly crumbs :( Anyone have any neat ideas of what to do with the oatmeal raisin cookie crumbs? I, of course, will probably still munch on the bits and pieces, but I think it'd be nice to turn the crumbs into something new.
I Am Ironman. So, today rolled around and I was bound and determined to make him that cake - the one that I decided to learn to make fondant for - and while my 6 year old went off with his dad for work, I spent all morning making this cake. Again, box cake :( but everything else is me.
Just getting started...did I pick the wrong fabric? So I probably jumped the gun, because I don't really know anything about fabrics!! I went to the fabric store and, though most sites about DIY pads talk about hemp, bamboo, PUL materials....I got just the regular old fleece for a "shell", organic cotton quilt batting for the absorbent "core", and I don't even know what it's called but I couldn't remember PUL and the lady suggested another fabric she said is used for lining cribs (seems like very dense cotton?) and I got that for a "lining".
Now I'm worried I got the wrong stuff!! Mainly it's the fleece I'm worried about, because *some* (and only a few, actually) sites say it's water proof or resistant, so will it not let the flow through to the cotton?? Also there's mention of it "beading"? I have yet to wash the fabric, but I was thinking that it might become more absorbent with more washes?? Please someone help me!! thanks :)
